Phillip Merchen served as a carbine expert with the 5th Armored Division in Central Europe during World War II, landing on Utah Beach six weeks after D-Day and driving across France, Belgium and Luxembourg. His Division was the first Allied force to enter Germany in the waning days of the war.

Father William Cappius served as a chaplain during World War l. He was pastor at St. Rose parish from 1932 until his death in 1945.
Norbert Guenther served in West Germany from 1954 until 1956 with the 34th Field Artillery Armored Battalion as a tank gunner.
Before being ordained as a Catholic priest in 1996, Father Mike Schmitz served at Offutt AFB, in Germany and Vietnam, as well as at Andrews AFB for Air Force One.
Veteran Stories: Serving with the Sandstorm Division
R. E. Loyd West is known as the founder, with his wife Theo, of West-Hodson Lumber and Concrete Company. Before he owned and operated a lumber yard, West served with distinction as a telephone lineman with the Second Division in numerous battles in France in World War I. He earned the Silver Star and a citation from the people of France for his gallantry under fire.
